ANGELA Bishop says she was left “devastated” during a performance by Dawn French when the British comedian made a joke about her mother — former politician Bronwyn Bishop — dying.

The Channel Ten presenter described the moment on Studio 10 this morning while reporting on the extreme backlash comedian Kathy Griffin has faced following a disturbing photoshoot that saw her hold up a faux severed and bloody head of Donald Trump.

“I’m never one to advocate censorship, ever, but I went to see Dawn French do her comedy show and I went with my husband and we were in desperate need of cheering up, I’ll be honest,” she told the panel.

“We went along to the show and I’ve loved her for years. And she made a joke and the punchline was [about] my mother dying. And I thought, ‘Is that funny? That’s not actually funny’.”

Bishop said the joke “absolutely ruined my night”.

It’s not clear exactly what the joke was.

The presenter added: “I thought, ‘Dawn French doesn’t know my mother. She doesn’t even live in Australia. So it’s obvious some local comic had written the joke for her.’ And I just felt really quite devastated by it.”

Following Kathy Griffin’s Trump stunt earlier this week, the comedian copped international backlash and was dropped by US television network CNN from hosting their annual New Year’s Eve coverage.

She quickly apologised following the outcry,

“I went way too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong,” she said in a video posted to social media.
