Kylian Mbappe has said that he “shouldn’t have come back” and played during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League first-leg defeat to Bayern Munich.

The France international was a doubt going into the match at the Parc des Princes after he picked up a thigh injury against Montpellier on February 1. PSG said he would be out for an estimated three weeks.

However, the 24-year-old was given a place on the bench for Christophe Galtier’s side on Tuesday and came on in the 57th minute of the match. Although Mbappe appeared to have equalised in the second half, an offside against left-back Nuno Mendes ruled out the goal. Bayern had scored in the 53rd minute through Kingsley Coman, which has given them a one-goal advantage going into the second-leg.

Although Mbappe conceded he wasn’t fit enough to play after the game, he is hoping to make a full recovery in time for the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena.

He said: “I’m not 100 per cent but I felt good enough to try to help my friends and play a little bit. Basically, I shouldn’t have come back.

“I tried everything, tried to put everything on my side so as not to have any regrets. I would have liked to play this game (in full).

“These are matches that we want to play, for which we work. Watching from the sidelines is very difficult. Today, I only had 30 minutes to give. I gave everything. I will try to recover to be as efficient as possible.”

Mbappe has been in fine form for PSG this season, finding the net 25 times in 27 appearances. He also has seven goals in the Champions League for the current campaign.

PSG’s second-leg match against Bayern takes place on March 8.
